Vel Phillips Memorial High School recently hosted its 6th Annual I Am Black Excellence Awards, an inspiring evening dedicated to celebrating achievement, culture, and community under this year’s theme, “Honoring the Village: A Legacy of Black Excellence.”
While the program was led by the outstanding members of the Black Student Union (BSU) Leadership Team, the event reflected the collective work and spirit of the entire BSU organization. The evening began with a lively welcome from DJ Franko, followed by a soul food sit-down dinner catered by Melli Mel’s Catering. Throughout the night, students honored more than 90 African American students, along with 10 staff members and 10 community leaders and organizations whose commitment continues to uplift and support youth. The ceremony also recognized Outstanding Educators Ms. Christine Hodge, Mrs. Carolyn Stanford Taylor, and Angela Hicks, whose leadership and dedication to education have left a lasting legacy on generations of MMSD students. The event was organized by Multicultural Services Coordinator and BSU Advisor Andrea Jones, alongside co-advisors Mr. Harris, Ms. Jessie, Ms. Brenda, and Ms. Tatiana, with the support of Principal Mr. Hendrickson.
A highlight of the night was the powerful message delivered by Alumni of the Year, Dr. India Anderson-Carter, whose words of encouragement inspired students to remain focused, pursue their purpose, and continue striving for excellence beyond high school. One of the most emotional moments of the evening came when graduating seniors shared heartfelt tributes to their parents and presented their mothers with a dozen roses, thanking them for their sacrifices and unwavering support. Students also surprised Mrs. Jones with flowers and the “Heart of It All” Award, an award they created and named especially for her. They shared that she was being honored because she consistently makes sure their voices are heard and their visions are brought to life. The students explained that without her guidance and support, many of the opportunities, programs, and experiences created for them would not be possible. Because she is always the one ensuring that others are celebrated and recognized, they felt it was only right that she be honored this year. Special recognition was also given to Ms. Janice Chestnut for her behind-the-scenes contributions, and Mrs. Toya Cook, who travels from Chicago each year to design the event décor, was also presented with flowers in appreciation for transforming the school cafeteria into an elegant banquet hall for the celebration. Mrs. Jones also expressed heartfelt gratitude to her husband, Max Jones, and daughters Kaylahn and Krystyn Jones, for their unwavering support, reminding everyone that it truly takes a village to uplift and sustain Black Excellence.
