Hello everyone! We wanted to share some exciting highlights from the MMSD Black Student Unions Spring 2024 HBCU and civil rights tour. Our students had an incredible experience visiting Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Alcorn State University, and Tougaloo College. These prestigious HBCUs provided our students with a glimpse into the rich history and educational opportunities available to African American students.

During the tour, our students also had the opportunity to visit the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. This powerful experience allowed them to walk in the footsteps of the civil rights movement, learning about the pivotal events and struggles that led up to the tragic death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The students were deeply moved by the museum’s exhibits and the stories of courage, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality.

In addition to the college visits and civil rights history, our students had the privilege of attending an empowering session with the cast members from the reality TV show “ Belle Collective”. This show features the lives of six remarkable African American women who are successful Multi-million dollar entrepreneurs in Jackson, Mississippi. The students engaged in a Q&A session with the cast, learning about their inspiring journeys, the challenges they overcame, and the strategies they used to achieve their remarkable success. This session left our students feeling motivated and empowered, knowing that they also have the potential to achieve their dreams.

The MMSD Spring 2024 HBCU and civil rights tour was a transformative experience for our students. It provided them with a deeper understanding of the importance of HBCUs in shaping the lives and futures of African American students. The empowering session with the cast members from “Belle Collective” further reinforced the idea that with hard work, determination, and a strong support system, our students can accomplish great things.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this tour possible, including the dedicated staff, generous sponsors, and the supportive community. Together, we are empowering our students to strive for excellence and pursue their dreams.
