In Time Of Silver Rain by Langston Hughes

In time of silver rain
The earth puts forth new life again,
Green grasses grow
And flowers lift their heads,
And over all the plain
The wonder spreads

 Of Life,
 Of Life,
 Of life!

In time of silver rain
The butterflies lift silken wings
To catch a rainbow cry,
And trees put forth new leaves
        to sing

In joy beneath the sky
As down the roadway
Passing boys and girls
Go singing, too,

In time of silver rain When spring
 And life

Are new.

Langston Hughes’ eloquent words are like a melody to me. This poem is one I love. Spring is that special time of year when I wish everything, and everyone could just slow down. Lord knows I should practice what I preach especially as promising signs of the pandemic are here.

Temperatures are ripe for lunches in the park and long walks amid budding trees. I even think a day of hiking is in order, just to appreciate all of the beauty found painted in nature.

April brings more than flowers and fragranced-filled rain. It’s also a time set aside to reflect on the importance of our financial wellness. It’s National Financial Literacy Month and what a great time to offer advice on ways to establish and maintain healthy financial habits.

In this issue we have an article that offers tips on improving your credit score. We also let small business owners know about what tax credits are available in the American Rescue Plan. And, we provide a list of books and apps for children and families to use to get young minds prime for planning and saving money.

We start the issue out by bringing UMOJA readers a glimpse into the making of Madison’s Southside Renaissance. Madison is fortunate to have exceptional Black visionaries that see great possibilities well beyond the ordinary.

Each bring their own unique talents and passions. But the ultimate goals are the same: Stop gentrification. Empower Black residents. And build generational wealth.

The rebirth of the city’s Southside is one worth watching.

From all of us at UMOJA, here’s wishing you a Happy Easter and Happy Passover! May your season be filled with hope, joy, love, and laughter.
