In May of 2023, then CUNA Mutual Group was undergoing the biggest change in the organization’s  close to 90-year history. CUNA Mutual Group, a mutual insurance company with deep ties to the  credit union movement and even deeper ties to the Madison community was, changing its name to TruStage. “TruStage has been a successful consumer brand. It made sense to elevate and expand that brand to everyone we work with and serve, says Angela Russell, TruStage’s Chief Diversity  Officer and TruStage Foundation Board President. “TruStage comes from the combination of ‘trust’  and ‘stage’ –– a nod to how our relationships are built on trust and how we help people confidently  make financial decisions at every stage of their life.”

Leaders at TruStage wanted to do something to celebrate the new brand but also signal to the

Madison community their name may have changed but, certain aspects of the company would remain. “Over the last five years, the TruStage Foundation has invested more the $25 million

in the communities in which we serve,” says Russell. “Our organization and most importantly our employees are deeply committed to the communities where they live and work. We wanted to do something that demonstrated that commitment. We also thought it would be a nice way for our employees, many of whom work remotely now, to come together, bond and help their communities. That’s how we came up with Community Impact Day.”

Community Impact Day is an annual employee-led initiative that connects TruStage employees with local charitable and non-profit organizations. During this one-day event employees put their time, skills/expertise and dollars to work for numerous community-based organizations.

In 2023 more than 480 employees participated in Community Impact Day contributing more than 1,200 hours. The event was such a huge success, TruStage decided to not just do it again but make it an annual event. “TruStage employees stepped in an even bigger way in 2024 when compared to 2023. Close to 600 employees participated,” says Russell. “They volunteered at more than 50 local organizations and contributed more than 1,500 hours”

Russell says plans for 2025 are already underway. The hope is the event will continue to grow in popularity. She also says that TruStage is always looking for community partners.
