Iconic and unforgettable, “TINA – The Tina Turner Musical” invites audiences to experience the electrifying journey of Tina Turner, the legendary “Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.” Known for her unparalleled talent as a singer, songwriter and actress, Tina Turner remains a towering figure in music history, having sold a staggering 100 million records worldwide. Bringing her extraordinary story to life, the musical will grace the stage of Overture Hall for eight performances from Tuesday, June 11 to Sunday, June 16, promising an unforgettable celebration of resilience, triumph and the timeless power of music.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Milwaukee-native Shari Washington Rhone, a member of the ensemble. Keep reading to learn about Rhone and her role in this phenomenal Broadway show.

What is your role?

I am a swing and an understudy. I cover for eight of the 10 women in the show, including Zelma (Tina’s mother) and GG (Tina’s grandmother). I’m ready to step in at any moment. During the first year of the tour, I was also the dance captain.

How long have you toured with “TINA – The Tina Turner Musical”?

I have been with the First National Tour since it began in July 2022.

How did you land this role?

Like most actors, through a series of auditions, the first few submitted on video and the final call back in person in New York. I will say, however, that I feel like I’ve been preparing for this show for years! I’ve sung with a Tina Turner Tribute band (Proud Mary out of Los Angeles) for 20 years and was in class the year prior working on a specific acting technique that happened to be the one used by our director Phyllida Lloyd. It really helped me to have a level of comfort during the audition I hadn’t had before. I had one of those moments in the audition room where I walked out feeling like “Did I just book this!?” And I’m so grateful that I did!

What do you like best about this musical and your roles?

First of all, you cannot deny Tina Turner’s music! Even after two years, I still sing along when I’m not on stage! This show brings together people of all ages, as well as theatergoers and non-theatergoers alike. I’ve met so many people where this was the first musical they’ve ever seen, but they came because of Tina’s music.  Secondly, Tina’s story is so powerful. It moves people, inspires people and, in some cases, brings about healing. Lastly, as a part of this cast, I feel honored and privileged to share Tina’s story and legacy.

Are you looking forward to performing in Wisconsin?

Yes, I’m thrilled to be performing in Wisconsin! I have so many family members and friends who are in Wisconsin, so it’s always nice to be home. “TINA – The Tina Turner Musical” has not been to Wisconsin before, and, if I’m not mistaken, I haven’t performed in a show here in Wisconsin since I was in my early 20s. It’s going to be very special.

Have you been to Madison before? Will any family and friends be coming to the show?

I’ve been to Madison many times—but my fondest memories are of spending two summers here for Summer Music Clinic at UW-Madison during high school. I’ve always found it a thriving city and look forward to immersing myself in that energy again. And I do have friends who live in the area who’ll be coming to the show!

Why should people not miss seeing this musical?

This musical has everything you could possibly want: a cast of amazing actors serving up a moving story of courage and perseverance, amazing dancing and, of course, the music of the “Queen of Rock ‘n Roll, Tina Turner!”
