As the sun began to set over Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Heartland Church in Sun Prairie, this small town transformed into a vibrant hub of joy, praise, and community spirit. On this remarkable evening, gospel music enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fall Gospel Fest, an event that has become a cherished tradition in Madison and the surrounding community.

With close to 500 attendees filling church, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation and excitement.  The concert, a vision brought to life by Clyde Gaines, has not only showcased gospel greats over the years but has also played a crucial role in establishing and nurturing a gospel presence in Dane County.

This evening featured the gospel voices of Amber Bullock who added a touch a jazz to familiar gospel songs; Jermaine Dolly who in a unique way used his vocal skills to capture the attention of listeners by singing older hymns ‘a capella.’  His voice was the instrument; and Hezekiah Walker and 11 fabulous background singers that rocked the room with a 4 piece band. Michelle Prather stepped forward from the singers to add some more flavor to one of Hezekiah Walkers many hits.  Also on stage were comedian / ventriloquist Willie Brown and Uncle Rufus who weaved humor into the concert serving as a perfect counterbalance to the powerful gospel performances and Vanessa McDowell (DJ Ace) who set the musical atmosphere by playing a collection of ‘that’s my gospel jam’ while ushers seated the audience.

The evening was hosted by the esteemed Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings and during the artist transitions, Letrice Stanley gave recognition to local gospel legends (gone but not forgotten) who helped establish a gospel presence in Dane County.  She also honored those familiar trailblazers who are currently visible on the gospel scene.

The concert is the vision of Clyde Gaines who for 20 years has brought gospel greats to the Madison area. The concert has moved from churches to school auditoriums to the largest venue, Madison’s beautiful Overture Center. Former invited gospel greats included… The Brown Sisters, Jekalyn Carr, Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, Travis Green, Todd Dulaney, Anita Wilson, Tasha Cobbs, Jonathan McReynolds, Ricky Dillard and more.

People Building Opportunity through Grace and Action (PeBoGa) is a nonprofit organization founded by Clyde Gaines and provides mentoring services to youth.  The organization also sponsors the fall gospel fest each year.

This 20th year anniversary celebration was next level. The concert goers were inspired as they raised hands, sang with the groups, laughed with Uncle Rufus, and even kneeled and ran through the aisles in praise.   The committee that was put together helped the evening flow smoothly.

Madison is looking forward to next year’s next level of the Fall Gospel Fest.
