Girl Power Rocks Empowers More than 90 Girls at “It Takes a Village” Girls Summit

(Black PR Wire) MIAMI, FL – The future looked bright as more than 90 “at-promise” girls came together for a day dedicated to unlocking their potential and building lifelong confidence. Girl Power Rocks (GPR) successfully hosted its “It Takes a Village” Girls Summit at the Overtown Performing Arts Center in Miami, providing an immersive day of leadership, mentorship and empowerment designed to help participants become confident leaders and changemakers.

The day-long event featured interactive leadership experiences, presentations by accomplished women leaders, participant testimonials, and a special recognition ceremony. True to its theme, the summit demonstrated the impact of community mentorship through partnerships with law enforcement, community leaders and local organizations.

Major Keandra Simmons and officers from the City of Miami Police Department attended to support the youth and reinforce the importance of community support. Additionally, Sister Circle Mentors, members of the Iota Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., energized the event by mentoring participants during interactive “Sisterhood Collection” breakout sessions. During the sessions, participants designed custom poster boards and creative projects while building teamwork, strengthening their sense of sisterhood, and developing entrepreneurial and leadership skills. The hands-on experience encouraged creativity, collaboration, and confidence, reinforcing the value of supporting one another while bringing their ideas to life.

The summit concluded on a high note with a back-to-school backpack shopping experience in partnership with Kinnect, helping bridge resource gaps and ensuring every girl left with the supplies needed to begin the school year with confidence.

“Seeing our community rally around these incredible girls, from law enforcement and dedicated sorority sisters to our passionate mentors, staff and partners, was nothing short of transformative,” said Thema Campbell, President and CEO of Girl Power Rocks. “The summit proved once again that when we invest in our youth and surround them with support, belief, and practical resources, there is no limit to what they can achieve,” added LaShawna Stanley, mentor coordinator and event coordinator for the “It Takes a Village” Summit at GPR.

Sonya Dunn Launches Historic General Election Campaign for Comptroller of Maryland

Business Executive, Retired Military Spouse, and Special Needs Mom Seeks to Make History While Delivering Independent Financial Oversight for Maryland Taxpayers

(Black PR Wire) Sonya Dunn is running to be the next Comptroller of Maryland to restore public trust in the state’s financial management. As Comptroller, she pledges to serve as a nonpartisan, independent taxpayer watchdog committed to protecting every taxpayer dollar.

Maryland has experienced:

  • consecutive years of structural budget deficits
  • billions of dollars in cost increases associated with the replacement of the Francis Scott Key Bridge
  • a downgrade of the state’s credit rating by Moody’s Ratings
  • a revision of the state’s credit outlook from stable to negative by S&P Global Ratings.

Dunn says these challenges underscore the need for more effective financial management and greater accountability in state government.

“I’m running because Maryland needs stronger financial leadership, better stewardship of taxpayer dollars, greater transparency, and an independent voice willing to ask the difficult questions, find solutions, and implement them,” Dunn said.

Dunn is the only African American woman nominated by the Republican Party for a statewide constitutional office in the United States. If elected, she would become the first Republican elected Comptroller of Maryland in more than a century, the first African American woman elected to statewide executive office in Maryland history, and the first African American woman elected as a state comptroller in United States history.

While recognizing the historic nature of her candidacy, Dunn says her campaign’s sole focus is Maryland’s financial future.

“History is meaningful, but it is not my reason for running,” Dunn said. “As Comptroller, I will serve as an independent, nonpartisan taxpayer watchdog focused on protecting every tax dollar and ensuring state government is accountable to the people it serves.”

Dunn is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of JEMH Enterprises LLC and brings more than 25 years of executive leadership experience spanning enterprise operations, finance, procurement, acquisition, technology integration, media, strategic communications, and data asset management.

As the spouse of a retired United States Air Force Major General, the daughter of pastors, and the mother of four adult children—including two sons with developmental disabilities—Dunn says her family’s experiences have shaped her commitment to servant leadership, fiscal responsibility, and advocacy for families at the state, national, and international levels.

She holds master’s degrees in Business Administration and Procurement and Acquisition Management and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration in Finance.

Campaign Priorities

  • Protect taxpayer dollars
  • Increase transparency in state spending and financial reporting
  • Strengthen procurement oversight
  • Fight fraud, waste, and abuse
  • Modernize financial systems through technology innovation and data transparency
  • Improve government efficiency
  • Support economic growth, entrepreneurship, and small businesses
  • Restore public trust
  • Put Maryland’s local communities and everyday taxpayers first
