Martel Chapman’s “Portraits of Jazz/Improvisation in Sound; Improvisation in Form” is on view in Overture’ Rotunda Gallery through Sunday, Feb 22.

A tribute to the jazz innovators who shaped his life, Chapman’s work celebrates the global roots of the genre and the improvisational spirit that drives both music and visual art. A Madison native, Chapman has long blended his love of drawing and jazz, calling the music “something to live with.” The exhibition runs in conjunction with the performance of “Step Afrika!’s The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence,” based on Lawrence’s iconic painting series that chart the story of African Americans moving from the South to the North in the early 1900s, on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in Overture Hall.
