The Madison Black Chamber of Commerce brought the flavor of Black Hollywood to Madison and all of the stars were out to celebrate and cheer on the winners of the Black Business Awards as guests walked the red carpet and shopped at the marketplace offering a plethora of goods from 26 local Black vendors.

The sixth year of the event, which was created by Chamber President and CEO Camille Carter was held on February 22 at the Monona Terrace. Carter addressed over 400 attendees and shared the humble origin story of the event and thanked the community for supporting the chamber’s growth. Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation deputy secretary and CEO shared his excitement of being housed in the new Black Business Hub, which is also the new home to The Chamber, located on South Park Street and having a Birdseye view to the growth that is taking place.

The room then became a theater as the stage became a barber shop, beauty boutique and hair salon as three local business owners shared a creative monologue about the passion they have for their work and the trends and traditions that factor in. The “shop talk” segment was a fun moment to imagine conversations in those intimate settings, which included an ode from Jeff “JP” Patterson to former barber Taylor “Smitty “ Smith Madison’s first Black barber. The award segment honored over 70 local Black businesses (See winners below) and one special award was presented by Carter, with help from Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway to Mike Miller. The Eagle Award is presented to unsung heroes and Miller, Business Development Specialist for the City of Madison, was surprised when he was called to the stage and lauded for his work to help establish many of the businesses that were in the room.
