LaMarr Franklin….The Man! The Myth! The Living Legend! The last two months have been filled with several key events that highlight a life of service to family, country and community. Most recently, On September 27th, LaMarr Franklin celebrated his 80th birthday with family and friends from across the United States. One week later, LaMarr Franklin was honored at the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the LaMarr Franklin Lofts in Milwaukee. These lofts offer 55 (1, 2, and 3 bedroom) units with 46 designated as affordable and subsidized housing to assist people in need. This is a welcomed and needed addition to the Harambee Neighborhood in Milwaukee! But who is LaMarr Franklin?

LaMarr Franklin is a living legend whose life is worthy of emulation and whose legacy is written in the scrolls of history for future generations to read about. LaMarr Franklin continues to live a purposeful life and is determined to help people reach their full potential. LaMarr was born and raised in Milwaukee and graduated from Messmer High School in 1963. At 21, he was drafted into the United States Army and served from March 1967 until March 1969, earning the title of Sergeant. During LaMarr’s service, he was exposed to new experiences, including food rationing and no running water. The worst part was being in combat… in the Vietnam war and not knowing if he would make it back home. Through it all, the war taught him to appreciate life and the many comforts that home afforded him. Once LaMarr returned home, he received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology at Roosevelt University in Chicago before starting a successful career in corporate sales. He retired as Vice President of Sales at CompuTec Integrated Solutions, Inc., after 15 years of service.

Not only was LaMarr gifted in sales, but he also has an innate ability to bring out the gifts and talents in others while giving back to the community. LaMarr is a humble giant whose service has been recognized at the local, state and national level. He has served on numerous state and community boards, including Board President of Northcott Neighborhood House. Lamar also founded the YMCA Black Achievers Program in Milwaukee and served over 40 years on the LaVarnway Boys and Girls Club Scholarship Board. Through the Boys and Girls Club Booster Club, he helped award scholarship dollars to youth across the greater Milwaukee area, but whose service ‘now’ expands the globe. As a direct result of his vision and action, over the years, thousands of youths have attended college and pursued career tracks leading to their professional and personal success. Evidence of ‘the many’ LaMarr Franklin success stories can be found in various leadership positions locally, statewide and nationally. LaMarr mentioned that he benefited greatly from organizations like the Boys and Girls Club when he was a child. Hence, with great pride & joy, self-less service and personal fulfillment, he considers his community involvement a mission to help the next generation in a full circle moment.  At 80 years young, LaMarr’s legacy continues. Although retired, LaMarr has reinvented himself and provides support to youth in our schools.

In essence, LaMarr has had a remarkable career and his service to his country must always be Remembered! Additionally, LaMarr has had an invaluable impact on the community. As a result of his commitment to Milwaukee, the Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation built and recently opened the LaMarr Franklin Lofts in his honor.

LaMarr is a humble giant!
