Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year. The hot, humid air becomes cool and brisk. Playful trees burst with vibrant colors. Bountiful harvests of crops supply. Not only does nature thrive, but so do people. This season becomes a time of comfort, warmth, and appreciation. People start bundling up in sweaters and scarves. The smell of homemade soup, pumpkin scented candles and baked goods fill the air. Families and friends gather together for wholesome entertainment and quality time. This transition, both in nature and in life, reminds us of the beauty that lies within change and the importance of savoring moments before they pass.
“As Thanksgiving approaches, I want to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this holiday. Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate gratitude for all the good things in life. However, it should not just be one day that we express our gratitude. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or even a favorite food, there is always something to be thankful for. In such a fast-paced world with constant stressors, it is typical that we forget to express gratitude for the things we take for granted. So, I am writing this article as a pause for mindfulness. Sit back, relax, and reflect on the beauty of your life.
When reflecting on my own blessings, I realize my list can go on forever. From something as small as a compliment that made my day to something as large as my family, there is always something I can give thanks for. In doing this, I began to wonder what the people around me would say and if it may change my perspective on the things in my life. So, I decided to ask friends, family, students, coworkers, and even strangers what they are thankful for. Their responses were heart-warming and truly eye-opening.

“I am most thankful for the precious moments I have with family and the lasting memories they’ve created. With my four children now adults with busy life schedules and the unfortunate passing of a few dear family members this year, I’ve reflected a lot on the value of quality time with family. With less opportunities to gather together with family, I spend more time expressing gratitude through the love and support I provide to my husband, children, extended family, and friends. Being blessed with the gift of close-knit family, joyful memories, and unconditional love has created a whole new meaning of life for me and my family I am forever thankful for that.”

“The true purpose of Thanksgiving to me is giving back to those who don’t have the same opportunities I have. Teaching at a elementary school in a low-income community has reminded me to express gratitude for my loving family, good education and resources. As many children in this area do not have these things, it is so important to me that I provide them with love, safety and support in my classroom in order to create positive educational experiences for them to cherish and remember.”

“I am especially grateful for everything that has been passed down to me over the generations. These gifts have enabled me to withstand, resist, and thrive through emotional turbulent times. With Thanksgiving coming up, I am reminded how thankful I am for my Big Mama’s dressing recipe. There are no measurements and endless variations which makes it so special!”

“One thing I am grateful for is the challenges I’ve faced throughout my life. Not only have they taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance but have also allowed me to discover my inner strength. Although it wasn’t easy, I’ve now found a deep appreciation for the journey of personal growth and the things that have shaped me into the person I am today. This perspective reminds me that gratitude can be found in all things and forms, it sometimes just takes a little extra strength to discover it.”

“I am most thankful for the job opportunities and community I have found in the United States. Moving from Brazil, I was fearful that people here were not going to be welcoming or accepting of a foreigner. However, I have instead been blessed with safety and support from my community and job which has allowed me to provide my four daughters with opportunities that I was not able to have as a kid. Being a foreigner in America has made me so appreciative of the gifts in my life and to express gratitude for the opportunities I have that I wouldn’t back in Brazil.

“I am thankful every day that God continues to wake me up and allow me to do the things I love! I’m beyond thankful for all the people in my life that I get to call family. My family is my backbone, and they continue to motivate me to persevere when times get rough. I am truly blessed that God gave me the family he did because I don’t know where I’d be without them.”
