President of Madison College

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, I always looked forward to the start of school right after Labor Day. It was a chance to catch up with friends and trash talk about our summer adventures and sports achievements. But as time passed, the return to school became more about getting ready for the next grade, transitioning to a new school, or preparing for post-secondary education.

As we focus on back-to-school, there are important things to consider for achieving success. For young children, it’s crucial to start the new school year feeling confident and equipped with the necessary materials and tools to be successful (i.e., pencils, rulers, paper, and backpacks). I’ve had the opportunity to be indirectly involved in the 100 Black Men of Madison’s Back to School Celebration at Madison College. Seeing the excitement in the eyes of kids receiving their “preparatory” tools and witnessing the relief and gratitude from parents who may struggle to afford these items among their other priorities has been incredibly gratifying.

Back-to-school also marks a fresh start for individuals at our post-secondary institutions.  It’s important to provide resources, tools, and a warm welcome to new and continuing students at Madison College as they realize their dream of acquiring employable skills or continuing their journey at a four-year institution.

As we gear up for the upcoming academic year, dedicated faculty and staff are working hard on new initiatives to support our students’ achievements. Whether at an elementary school, high school, community college, or university, our students’ success is paramount, and the first weeks are crucial.  I encourage all students to remain focused on their academic goals and learning. I also call upon each educational institution to create a welcoming environment to foster student prosperity. Together, let’s ensure that every student realizes the potential for success within them.
