I had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Rashad Burroughs, who portrays Toulouse Lautrec in the national Broadway tour. Keep reading to learn more about Burroughs and his role in the spectacular Broadway show.

Nick Rashad Burroughs grew up in Alabama, an avid singer in his church and unaware of the world of musical theater and Broadway. It wasn’t until he saw the national tour of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” in Birmingham, Alabama, that his interest was sparked, and he became fully captivated by the dream of making it onto the Broadway stage one day.

Burroughs quit sports and got into musical theater as soon as he possibly could. Two months after graduating from the University of Alabama, Burroughs landed the role of Angel in “Kinky Boots,” making his Broadway debut and moving to New York City to start his career.

Before joining “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” as Toulouse Lautrec, Burroughs played Ike in “TINA: The Tina Turner Musical” and remembered “Moulin Rouge!” was in the same Tony’s season as “TINA.” Burroughs has always been inspired by Sahr Ngaujah, who originated the role of Toulouse.

“Anything that he does, I want to be a part of,” said Burroughs, explaining what motivated him to audition for the show.

Before taking the stage each night, Burroughs prepares by listening to music and working out.

“I have to get myself in a place of relaxation, while also being active and having fun, because this show is really a lot of fun,” said Burroughs. “I have to produce so much energy the second I hit that stage.”

While Burroughs enjoys touring and sees it as a blessing, being away from home for extended periods can be challenging.

“Touring is so exciting and really a blessing,” he said. “It does get hard being away from family and friends for a while—but makes up for it when they come to see you in a show and see you do what you are so passionate about!”

When asked why audiences shouldn’t miss seeing this show, Burroughs had lots to say.

“’Moulin Rouge!’ is such a spectacle. There is no show that is so in your face and already so beloved by audiences,” he said. “It is one of the most amazing love stories that is filtered in with the biggest spectacle of beauty, the music they added in, the sets and costumes. It is impossible not to have a good time.”

For those aspiring to get into musical theater or start a career of their own on Broadway, Burroughs offers some advice: “The faster you fall in love with who you are as an individual and a performer, the quicker people will be able to see you and give you work that suits you as you are true to your art and true to yourself. Don’t be intimidated by how hard it is.”

Seven years ago, Burroughs traveled with the national tour of “Something Rotten,” which had a stop in Wisconsin.

“I remember good food and very pretty trees!” said Burroughs.

Although he did not have much time to explore Wisconsin back then, he is looking forward to returning and learning more about the Badger State in July.
