When the University of Wisconsin–Madison opened the South Madison Partnership (SMP) in 2015, the goal was clear: create a space where the university and community could connect, collaborate, and grow together. Located at 2238 South Park Street, right in the heart of one of Madison’s most historically underrepresented neighborhoods, SMP is more than a building. It’s a commitment to mutual respect, access, and shared opportunity.
Over the past decade, SMP has grown into a trusted community resource and gathering space. It has welcomed thousands of residents, students, nonprofits, and university programs through its doors by offering room for events, learning, connection, and cultural expression. At its heart, SMP is not just about bringing university resources into the neighborhood, it’s about building reciprocal relationships, where campus and community learn from one another.
Through cultural programming, community partnerships, and day-to-day conversations, the university has gained just as much as it has offered. Community members have helped shape the direction of the space, and their insight continues to guide its growth.
One example of this spirit is SMP’s partnership with UW–Madison’s Office of Human Resources. Through monthly “Work with Bucky” open house hours, job seekers can meet one-on-one with campus HR professionals to explore employment opportunities and get support with the application process. The next session will take place on Wednesday, September 24th, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 103 on the lower level of the Villager Mall. This summer, SMP proudly marks its 10th anniversary milestone that celebrates a decade of collaboration and community-rooted work.
To honor this moment, SMP participated as a sponsor and neighbor of the Urban League’s Unity Picnic on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 1-4pm, held at the Villager Mall. While the Urban League leads this long-standing community tradition, SMP staff and anchor partners complemented the festivities by hosting interactive booths on the terrace outside our space. Visitors enjoyed face painting, balloon animals, giveaways, and opportunities to connect with local organizations and programs. The SMP space was also open for guests to explore.
We’re honored to celebrate this milestone alongside our neighbors, friends, and partners in South Madison, and to uplift the spirit of community that has made this space what it is today.
As Associate Director and South Madison resident of over 20 years, I have the privilege of seeing these relationships flourish firsthand. Whether you’re a local resident, a UW–Madison partner, or someone looking to engage more deeply in community work, we welcome you to stop by and experience what SMP has to offer.
