On June 24, 2023, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Kappa Psi Omega Chapter collaborated with Universal Recycling Technologies to host an electronics recycling event at Warner Park. Members of the Madison chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. joined in the volunteer effort. Residents from all over Dane County brought their unused household electronics including computers, televisions, and printers to be recycled for free and without any paperwork. The event collected 33,786 pounds of electronics from 372 homes. Properly recycling electronics reduces strain on landfills and waste facilities. Although the Madison Streets Division is not charging for computer recycling through 2023, televisions and other electronics still incur a recycling charge. The community showed up in great numbers to take advantage of this opportunity. This event was part of the 2022-2026 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. international service program focused on enhancing our environment. Through this initiative, the sorority is mobilizing its nearly 120,000 active international members, including 40 members in Madison, to adopt and maintain sustainable practices that support our environment.
