An Afro Discoveries Journey to the Motherland

Have you ever dreamt of tracing your ancestral roots, of walking the very land where your history began? As a proud African American, that dream burned brightly within me for years. That’s why I, along with my wonderful children Timothy and Dailen, founded Afro Discoveries – a new venture driven by a shared passion for connecting our community with the Motherland.

Afro Discoveries is more than just a travel company; it’s a deeply personal mission. It’s about forging a deeper connection with our heritage, shattering stereotypes, and revealing the true brilliance of Africa. It’s about experiencing the warmth of the people, the resilience of the cultures, and the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes.

This past November, that mission came alive on our maiden voyage. We embarked on an unforgettable adventure with a group of enthusiastic African Americans, and let me tell you, it was truly inspiring!

Our journey began in Senegal, the air thick with history and the whispers of our ancestors. We wandered through bustling markets, the vibrant energy and exotic aromas a feast for the senses. In the village of Yenne, we were welcomed by the village leader, a gifted singer whose heartfelt songs wove a spell of cultural richness. We visited schools, witnessing the bright eyes of eager children yearning for knowledge. It was there that Dailen, one of our CEOs and a passionate middle school teacher, formed a beautiful partnership with one of the schools – a testament to the power of connection that transcends borders.

The rhythmic pulse of the djembe drum echoed through the Blaise Senghor Cultural Center, a sound that seemed to awaken something deep within us. We learned the art of African drumming, feeling a primal connection to the land and its traditions. Evenings were a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds. We were captivated by performances of traditional storytelling, drumming, and dance, the infectious energy pulling us into the vibrant celebration. We couldn’t resist joining in, our laughter mingling with the rhythmic beats.

A somber yet significant stop was Goree Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a chilling reminder of the brutal legacy of slavery. As we walked through the House of Slaves, the weight of history pressed upon us. Yet, amidst the sorrow, a sense of resilience emerged. We dipped our hands in the island’s fountain, a symbolic gesture of connection honoring the strength and perseverance of our ancestors.

Crossing the border into The Gambia, we were met with the warm embrace of the Jola tribe. Under a sky ablaze with stars, we danced to the pulsating rhythms of their music, feeling a profound sense of belonging in this ancestral land.

A delightful vegan lunch awaited us at Spicy Tasty Vegan, a haven of plant-based delights owned by a remarkable retired African-American couple who relocated to The Gambia. As we savored their flavorful creations, they shared their wisdom on health and well-being, emphasizing the importance of a plant-based diet for people of color due to our unique nutritional needs.

The adventure continued at Fathala Wildlife Reserve, where we embarked on an exhilarating safari. We tracked zebras, spotted antelopes, and even attempted a (slightly comical) “giraffe hunt” – an experience that brought us even closer as a group. The undisputed highlight, however, was walking with lions, an awe-inspiring encounter that left us breathless.

Throughout this incredible journey, we encountered moments of profound reflection and pure joy. We learned about our history, celebrated our culture, and forged meaningful connections with the people and the land. As Johnny Winston Jr., one of our fellow travelers, eloquently expressed, “As an African American, I’ve sometimes felt the need to be on guard around unfamiliar groups. But in Senegal and The Gambia, I felt a strong sense of solidarity and ease.” He further emphasized the profound impact of the journey, stating, “This is something I will never forget!”

Kay Simmons, another traveler, captured the transformative nature of the experience perfectly: “For me, going to Senegal and Gambia was truly a life-changing experience.”

This journey with Afro Discoveries was more than just a vacation; it was a pilgrimage, a homecoming. It was a tapestry of memories woven with threads of history, culture, and the enduring spirit of the African diaspora.
