In 1834…Father Patrick Francis Healy, the first Black awarded a Ph.D. degree, was born in Georgia.

In 1974…Grenada gained its independence from Great Britain.

In 1956...Autherine Juanita Lucy, the first Black student at the University of Alabama, was suspended after a riot at the school.

In 1883...James Hubert "Eubie" Blake, pianists and composer, was born in Baltimore, MD.

In 1791...Benjamin Banneker, inventor, surveyor, mathematician, and astronomerr, began to help layout Washington, DC.6
