educator, was born in Great Barrington, MA.
In 1895, William H. Heard, AME minister and
educator, was named minister to Liberia.
In 1942, Haki Madhubuti, activist, author, and
founder of the Third World Press, was born.
In 1979, Frank E. Petersen, Jr. became the first
Black Brigadier General in the U.S. Marine Corps.
In 1990, Arthur A. Fletcher, businessman, was
named Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (CCR) by
President George Bush.
