greatest running back in football history, was born in St. Simons
Island, GA.
In 1938, Dr. Mary Frances Berry was born in
Nashville, TN.
In 1976, Berry became the first woman to serve as
Chancellor or a large research university, the University of Colorado.
In 1942, Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black
Panther Party, was born in Monroe, LA.
In 1963, Michael Jeffrey Jordan, one of
basketball's all-time best players, was born in Brooklyn, NY.
In 1982, Thelonious Monk, famed jazz pianist,
died in Englewood, NJ. Monk, whose improvisation distinguished him
from other performers in his field, composed many hits including "Epistrophy"
and "Round Midnight."
